CranioCatch will give momentum to dental tourism!

Eskişehir (Dental News) It is expected that the artificial intelligence software CranioCatch, which acts as a virtual assistant to dentists, will also boost dental tourism. Associate Professor Dr. Elif Bilgir, a member of the team that developed CranioCatch at Eskişehir Osmangazi University (ESOGÜ) Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Oral, Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology, emphasized that the software enables diagnosis and treatment planning for foreign patients before they come to our country, which will shorten the diagnostic and treatment processes and give a significant boost to health tourism, especially dental tourism.

As recalled, the CranioCatch software emerged in 2019 through a multidisciplinary collaboration between academicians in the fields of computer science and dentistry at ESOGÜ. The developed software provides automatic diagnosis and treatment planning in 2D dental radiographs using the power of artificial intelligence technology in the imaging stage of dentistry. Initially, the two radiologist dentists, one orthodontist, and four academicians working in computer science started their work by evaluating the detection of simple dental findings with artificial intelligence. As the models obtained from the studies achieved success, new steps were taken to develop this software, which can automatically evaluate radiographs and provide output in report format. The software received trademark registration in 2020 and received investment in January 2022 through a crowdfunding organization called "fon bulucusu". And a company was established under the name CranioCatch in the Eskişehir Technology Development Zone. At this stage, the software's 2D module, labeling module, and training modules continue to be sold in Turkey and abroad.

Associate Professor Dr. Bilgir, who is a member of the CranioCatch team and has published more than 40 studies on artificial intelligence in national and international reputable journals, evaluated the current state of their artificial intelligence software to DENTAL NEWS. Drawing attention to the ongoing work for the 3D reporting and orthodontic modules of CranioCatch, Associate Professor Dr. Bilgir explained how the software will contribute significantly to health tourism today:

"The main problems that played a role in the development of this software include the excessive workload of doctors, insufficient number of experienced doctors, and limited time for radiographic interpretation by doctors. In addition, other factors to be considered are the possibility of human error in diagnosis and the problems in terms of both time and cost due to the obligation of reporting radiographs. Moreover, the software will allow for diagnosis and treatment planning for foreign patients before they come to our country. This will shorten the diagnostic and treatment processes and give a significant boost to health tourism, especially dental tourism."
